Happy Holidays from New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Inc. (NJVLA)!
2008 was another wonderfully productive year for NJVLA. With continued help from special people like you, we look forward to an even better 2009!
This year, especially, when grants and funding have been affected greatly by the ever-changing economy, we encourage you to continue supporting the Arts and NJVLA. If you have given to NJVLA before or if you are considering giving for the first time, we at NJVLA want to remind you of all of the amazing things that NJVLA, through its dedicated group of volunteer attorneys, does for the Arts Community in the great Garden State of New Jersey.
· Since our inception in 2005, our more than 170 volunteer attorneys have provided services on over 400 individual legal matters, and NJVLA's pro bono attorneys are responsible for providing pro bono legal services valued at almost $500,000.
· NJVLA volunteer attorneys have helped numerous arts and cultural organizations receive non-profit status and update their documentation; reviewed and drafted contracts for filmmakers, musicians, visual artists, and others; and helped resolve disputes over artwork sales and music royalties, just to name a few types of matters. You can download a description of our available legal services here.
· As Executive Director, I have reached out to artists and representatives of arts and cultural organizations throughout the State, letting them know that our services are available and helping members of the Arts Community understand important things they need to know about copyright and music licensing law. We also provide educational services on a wide range of other legal topics of interest to Arts practitioners. Let us know if your group would like to schedule a speaker from NJVLA.
Here are links to some of the great things NJVLA has been up to this past year and how you can get involved.
· You can download the Winter 2008/2009 edition of our newsletter, the Arts Legal Line, here . It features many pictures from the highly successful "Fall for the Arts" fundraiser in October. This wonderful event raised nearly $6,500 for NJVLA.
· You can read previous editions of the Arts Legal Line, numerous articles on a variety of arts-related legal topics, and my column in The National Law Journal on our website, here. Many items on our website also are available in large print format.
· You can participate in our latest Needs Assessment Survey to help us further improve our services and pro bono attorney recruiting efforts by clicking here.
· If you are an attorney, you can learn everything you need to know about volunteering for NJVLA here and tell us everything we need to know about you here.
As you can imagine, due to the effects of the economy on the funding and grants on which we rely, this year has presented enormous challenges for our growing organization. While the New Jersey State Council on the Arts; the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; and the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey have all been generous with their grant assistance, funding for the Arts is generally struggling in the current economic climate. If NJVLA is to continue its valuable work, then it must receive support from the community at large, both individuals and organizations. Now, more than ever, we need your help and financial support to continue to provide services for, and help promote, the Arts in New Jersey.
As you make your end-of-the-year donations, please consider giving to NJVLA. NJVLA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and a registered New Jersey charity, and all donations are tax deductible to the amount allowable by law. You can donate to us securely via PayPal right from the "Make a Donation" button on our website, www.njvla.org, or you can send a check to P.O. Box 1520, LaurelSprings, NJ 08021. Every donation, no matter how small, helps us to help the Arts in New Jersey.
Please support NJVLA so that we can help the thriving Arts Community that makes New Jersey a great place to live, work, and visit. Also, please tell all your friends about us and the important work we do. Thank you.
From the staff and Board of Directors of NJVLA, Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for a Wonderful 2009!!!
